Founders TJ and Hadley Douglas founded America's largest certified Black-owned beverage retailer, The Urban Grape, to thoughtfully curate wine, beer, and spirits from around the world. Since its opening in 2010, The Urban Grape has celebrated the classics while also making space for diverse makers, regions, and varietals to increase representation in the industry.

TJ Douglas is the creator of The Progressive Scale, The Urban Grape's proprietary system of categorizing wine by body instead of varietal or region as a way to center the customer experience on self-discovery, growth, and exploration. The Progressive Scale helps wine enthusiasts of all experience levels engage with interesting stories, producers, and bottles.
