Le Ragnaie was founded in 2003 by Riccardo Campinoti. A forward thinker, Campinoti sought out the highest elevation vineyard site for his home vineyard, Passo del Lumo Spento. For years, Campinoti had to bottle wine produced from the vineyard Chianti Colli Senesi, because it exceeded the upper elevation limit of the Brunello appellation. At that time, most thought he was out of his mind for wasting his energy and investment on this site, but Campinoti worked with others in the region to raise the elevation limit due to climate change concerns in the warm, Mediterranean climate. Once the Consorzio did, his vines were ready to go for Brunello production.
The wines of Le Ragnaie have gotten attention from their early vintages. Bright and lifted, yet concentrated, these are the Brunellos for true Sangiovese lovers - lovers of Le Pergole Torte, Biondi Santi, and Salvioni would be very pleased with any bottle of Le Ragnaie sangiovese. Much like other great disciples of Sangiovese Grosso, Ricardo Campinoti ensures that his organically grown grapes are handled with extraordinary care, aged only in large, neutral oak barrels for extended periods of time, allowing the wines to grow into themselves.
