September Somm's Pick Add-On

Domaine de Trévallon 2019 Alpilles Rouge, Les Baux de Provence, France
Domaine de Trévallon’s vineyards lie carved into the chalky white limestone of Provence’s Alpilles. In 1955, artist René Dürrbach—a close friend of Pablo Picasso—purchased the estate. In the early 1970s, his son Eloi made the audacious decision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, a rarity in the region, alongside late-harvest Syrah. The Cabernet’s distinctive spice found perfect harmony with Syrah’s depth, setting the stage for something singular.

Eloi’s debut vintage in 1976 was met with instant acclaim. But in 1991, a new decree capped Cabernet Sauvignon in the Les Baux-de-Provence appellation at 20%. Unwilling to alter his blend, Eloi accepted a downgrade to “Vin de Pays” in 1993 rather than compromise. His steadfast vision only deepened the wine’s cult status.

Classification aside, Trévallon’s wines speak for themselves. The vineyard’s elevation brings freshness, bright acidity, and floral lift, while Cabernet lends structure for extraordinary aging potential. Each bottle bears a label featuring artwork by Dürrbach—an emblem of the estate’s marriage of art and terroir.
